Just back from the dentist after having this done. I had to have it because I managed to get an infection under a posted crown ad it was the only way to sort it without destroying the tooth. Worst part? After the surgery I was told NO BOOZE FOR THREE DAYS!!! and it's Novacon tomorrow! If they'd told me that before I made the appointmant I'd have had it done next week (sob).

(I ended up having to avoid alcohol for a couple of weeks earlier this year, due to infection preceding a root canal, so I do sympathise.)
