All packed and ready for the off.  Train at midday so should be in Grantham in time to help with any setup, crunchy joints from it being bloody cold permitting of course.  Just got to get something to read on the train.  Thinking of re-reading the Hobbit just to try and see how they're going to make it into TWO films?

Word on the street is that the first film will be "The Hobbit" in full and the second will fill in the gaps between that and LotR.

I'm not sure I believe this, either.

There's already a flood of suggested titles, punning on well-known films.

There's one obvious story, but I'm not sure its worth trying to tell. But think of what Gandalf is retconned into doing when he isn't on-stage in The Hobbit

The trouble is, there's so much that could spoil the opening of LoTR, by making the initial innocence of the Hobbits into a hollow sham; a Potemkin Hobbiton. LotR depends on the revelation, and opn Frodo and his friends growing into their roles.

But part of that is that Bilbo (and the audience), while they know about what Bilbo did, just don't realise how big a thing it is. They don't realise just what Gandalf is.

But let me throw off another idea, a setting hinted at in the books but not so damaging to the structure of LotR.

Legolas in Mirkwood.

It fits what we know from Tolkien of the character's background. It allows Gandalf to steer his course in the way he does with Bilbo. There would be an opportunity to set up his initial distrust of Dwarves.

And, of course, you get mile-long queues of fangirls at the cinema.
