You're probably going to get scratched, but try using a face cloth or other rough material, dipped in cold water, and rub his 'bits' much like a mother cat would clean a kitten in order to trigger urination.

Oh, and have a sample tube handy, because he might go off like a fountain.

May try that at the weekend when we can go at it two handed. One holds the cat over the tray while the other risks shredding.

I've had unhappy cats but reasonable luck with the plastic pellet litter - have you tried that route? I've just left them shut in a small room with water and a small tray with the plastic pellets.
